![]() Freedomland Quartet was formed in 2000 consisting of four charter members; Thomas Knight (bass), Joseph Knight (baritone), Jimmy Collins (lead), and Mike Barker (tenor). Before Freedomland came into existence, most people would recognize the members from their affiliation with The Believers Quartet. The Believers Quartet was formed in the late 1970’s and became a very popular regional group through the mid 1980’s traveling throughout Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. During this time they fronted many of the major groups of that era such as the Kingsmen, Cathedrals, Singing Americans, and others. Thomas and Mike traveled many a mile during this period of our history. The group kept going until the late 1980’s with several member changes, and then disbanded. In 1998 The Believers Quartet was reorganized with many of it’s previous members and sang for two years with various personnel changes. In 2000, the group received several phone calls on separate occasions asking directions to concerts where they were scheduled to perform. The group was confused because it was not scheduled to be at the locations that were mentioned. After further research, it was discovered that there were two other groups within the State of Mississippi called The Believers Quartet. Upon this finding, the group decided to change the name to Freedomland Quartet, symbolizing Christians’ eternal home (Heaven) as our destination. As in most southern gospel quartets, it is hard to keep all members together for great lengths of time. We have had a few personnel changes in the past few years. Mike Donovan replaced Mike Barker in the tenor position in 2003 and Brian Johnston replaced Jimmy Collins in the lead position in 2006. Freedomland Quartet
was voted favorite quartet at the Mississippi State Quartet
Convention in 2006 and 2007. What an honor this was, and we
would like to give God all the glory and thank him for
allowing us to serve him with the talents he has provided. |
